Shadows

An exploration of the complex relationship we have with ourselves

The series called “Shadows” has been inspired by the shadow puppetry of Indonesia, as well as 19th century European silhouette cutouts. I adopted these traditional techniques to tell contemporary stories. I found these techniques fascinating because silhouettes require you to strip away superfluous detail and tell a story in its barest form. Shadows also feel like the subtext of an object.

Growing up in the 1980s, there was an absence of dialogue around mental illness. I created this series of cut outs to explore mental health and the complex and often conflicted relationship we have with ourselves.
